Your crystals have often been on extensive journeys and passed through many hands to make it to you. Along the way, they absorb energy from the people and places they've visited, this energy may not always be necessary or helpful. Cleansing your crystals is a way of removing the unwanted energy they may have accumulated and makes cleansing an essential initial ritual when they first come to us. It is recommended to cleanse your crystals at least monthly, and even more frequently if they've been hard at work with you.

Crystals also need to be regularly charged to keep them working at their full potential. Over time, crystals can loose some of their energetic power, luckily this is easily remedied. There are several methods for cleansing and charging crystals. Read on to learn more.

Method #1 - Selenite

Heart-shaped selenite bowl

There's a reason selenite is listed top. Selenite is our go-to method for both cleansing and charging our crystals, making it a 'must have' for crystal care. It renews any crystal placed on or near it without the need itself to be charged. Often a selenite plate or bowl is used. Simply place the crystal you're working with on-top or inside, ideally overnight to cleanse and charge to its full potential.

Tip: Selenite isn't the only crystal you can use for charging. You can also place your crystals on a bed of amethyst or clear quartz.

Method #2 - Moonlight

The light of the moon, especially potent when full, can also be used to both cleanse and charge your crystals. Ideally, they are placed outside, connected to the earth, although a window ledge or balcony is just fine.

Tip: If you're placing crystals outside be sure to check they are water safe.

Method #3 - Sunlight

Certain crystals can be cleansed and charged in the light of the sun. This is not suitable for some crystals which can crack or fade under prolonged direct sunlight or even pose a fire risk.

Tip: Beware. Crystals such as quartz can focus the sun's energy and pose a fire risk. Be mindful of leaving crystals unattended or near flammable objects in sunlight

Method #4 - Water

Certain crystals can be cleansed by being bathed or held under running water. Using a clean, fresh and natural source such as a river or stream is a lovely way to do this. Be sure to check your crystals are water safe before dipping!

Tip: Some examples of water safe crystals include rose, clear and smoky quartz, amethyst, citrine, green aventurine, jasper and carnelian

Method #5 - Earth

Burying your crystals in the earth is another method for cleansing. This is a lovely ritual as we return them to the earth from which they came. Again this isn't suitable for all crystals, so check they are water safe (examples above). Bury your crystals around an inch down into the soil and leave for a minimum of 12 hours to recharge and renew. One option in to bury them on the full moon and dig them up on the new moon.

Method #6 - Smudging

The smoke of sage, palo santo or incense can be used to cleanse your crystals of unwanted energies, simply waft the smoke over and around your crystals whilst visualising them being cleansed.

Method #7 - Sound

The sounds of chanting, drumming, gongs, bells and various other healing music modalities can effectively cleanse unwanted energy and carry it away.

Cleansing and charging rituals are a wonderful way to connect with your crystals.

There's plenty of options for cleansing and charging your crystals to make sure they're working at their maximum potential. Make sure you do his when they first come to you and regularly thereafter depending on how closely you're working with them. Be invited to explore different options and don't be afraid to explore what works best for you.
