Roman Chamomile is one of those oils that doesn’t shout to be noticed. Its energy is soft and maternal. Think of her as a whisper, inviting relaxation, and reminding us that we don’t always have to hold it all together.

I love that this oil is known by gardeners as "the plant's physician", with its presence seemingly improving the health of its green neighbours, and thereby the wellbeing of the whole garden.

Whilst Roman Chamomile teaches gentleness, behind her floral, sweet, herbaceous scent is a powerful ally, for the body, for the emotions, and for the soul.

The Science and Sourcing: A Calming Force for Body and Mind

doTERRA sources its roman chamomile from the Pacific Northwest (USA), as well as parts of England, as its necessary to ensure high amounts of rainfall and a relatively consistent climate.

Steam distilled from the delicate white flowers of Anthemis nobilis, Roman Chamomile essential oil has been used for centuries in herbal medicine for its calming, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. Its main chemical constituents, including isobutyl angelate, butyl angelate, and camphene, contribute to its ability to ease tension, both physically and emotionally.

Whilst there are two main types of chamomile, German and Roman, it is Roman Chamomile that is especially renowned for its soothing, relaxing and sleep inducing properties . This makes her a beautiful ally in helping to create the conditions for rest, repair, and restoration.

Energetics & Alchemy: The Soft Power of Surrender

Roman Chamomile carries a unique frequency, working quietly but deeply, especially in the emotional and energetic body.

This is the oil you reach for when you’ve been carrying too much for too long. When you’re trying to control the uncontrollable. When your heart feels tender and your inner child is crying out to be held.

Where some plants activate or energise, Roman Chamomile does the opposite, it invites you to soften, release, and receive. Its medicine lies in surrender. Not in the passive sense, but as an act of trust. Of remembering you are not alone, and that it’s okay to let go.

It’s especially helpful for:

  • Inner child work

  • Grief and emotional re-patterning

  • Empaths who feel energetically saturated or “porous”

  • Over-givers who need to turn their nurturing inward

This oil mirrors the archetype of the Divine Mother, not just the one who cares for others, but the one who teaches us to mother ourselves.

Interestingly the golden hue of her oil is also said to attract abundance and so we may choose to work with Roman Chamomile to welcome new opportunities and good fortune.

Chakra and Crystal Correspondences

Roman chamomile pairs beautifully with blue lace agate, both being associated with the throat chakra. Their gentle and calming influence invites empathy, understanding and softness. We can choose to work with these earth treasures to advocate for ourselves effectively, speaking our truth and ensuring we claim for ourselves what we really need.

Quick Clarity Ritual: Inhale, Soften, Trust

In moments of overwhelm or emotional overload, reach for Roman Chamomile.

  • Place a drop on your heart, wrists, or behind the ears

  • Close your eyes and take three slow, intentional breaths

  • Whisper or think:

“I am safe to soften. I trust the wisdom in my feelings.”

Let it be simple. Let it be enough.

Roman Chamomile reminds us that healing doesn’t have to be hard.

Sometimes, it looks like rest. Like breath. Like a warm cup of tea and a hand on your heart. In a world that asks so much of us, this oil is an invitation to return to center, to calm, and to the quiet voice within that says, “You’re okay. You’re held.”
